Blue-on-Blue …

August’s class at Icarus Creative Arts Studio was all blue – trying to stay cool from the hot and humid weather we’ve been having in San Diego!

I wanted to use a little bit larger tile than the Zendala. I recently discovered the five inch “Hahnemuhle Round Watercolor Paper Rounds”. They’re just a little bigger than the regular Zendala and allow a little more room for tangling. I pre-tinted the tiles using Lindy’s Magicals. Blue micron pens, a blue pastel chalk pencil for shading, white chalk pencil for highlights and silver metallic Gelly Rolls were the tools of the day.

Our string divided the tile into six spaces. The string outline was covered using the pattern Flux. We then drew different patterns inside the six spaces to fill our tile. Patterns used were Puf by Carole Ohl; Printemps, Cubine, Arukus, Jetties, Hollibaugh and Crescent Moon from Zentangle. The patterns were then shaded using the blue pastel chalk pencils with some highlighting with white chalk, finished with silver Gelly Roll for sparkle. A couple patterns presented a challenge or two, but in looking at the final results, every tile looks amazing! Another great job by everyone.

September is just around the corner. The next class at Icarus will be Sunday, September 13th from 1pm-3pm. This class was full so make your plan early if you would like join in September. Reach out to me at tanglesbythesea@gmail.com to save your spot.
